Asian Boyz Gang Member Convicted of Murder

He was the shot-caller in the Asian Boyz gang and he now has to face justice in connection with at least eight murders and 10 shootings in the San Fernando and San Gabriel valleys. A jury convicted Marvin Mercado in connection with these crimes and will decide whether to recommend a sentence of death or life in prison without the possibility of parole.

He eluded police for more than a decade by escaping to the Philippines. He lived under an assumed name until he was arrested and extradited to Los Angeles in 2009.  The Asian Boyz gang grew out of a meeting between Mercado and fellow Cleveland High School student in the 1980s. Over the next several , they built a circle of friends who would later evolve into a feared street gang. By the 1990s, the Asian Boyz had over 200 members, with the bulk of them in Southern California and Texas. The gang participated in property crimes that targeted Southeast Asian immigrant business people.

Mercado was convicted in with the April 1995 murder of two rival gang members in Van Nuys and a triple murder shooting in August 1995 on the San Bernardino Freeway in El Monte. Prosecutors presented evidence that he went to a party in March 1996 and pulled the pin on what he thought was a live grenade, throwing it into a crowd others opened fire with guns, killing one and injuring two others. He was also linked to at least two other murders.
