The Los Angeles County district attorney's office filed three counts of vehicular manslaughter and one count of felony hit-and-run against a Montclair, California from a December 2002 street race collision that killed three men. Roque Torres was arrested at his residence after police investigations revealed that he was the driver of a red 2002 Acura RSX that fled the scene on December 20, 2002. Detectives from the Pomona Police Department said he was racing against a 1993 Honda that crashed into a van on Garey Avenue north of Philadelphia Street in Pomona. Police said the cars that were racing reached speeds of about 100 mph, according to witness statements. The three occupants of the Honda, Jamael Johnson, Jose Issac Batres, and Carlos Mendoza, all Pomona, California residents, died from their injuries suffered in the collision. Torres' car was not struck and he fled the scene after the collision.
The case went cold until last year, when detectives from the Pomona Police Department's Traffic Services received a tip about the fatal crash. Police were able to locate the Acura, which had been repainted several times and sold since the collision. Torres was identified as the registered owner of the car. He is being held at Pomona Police Jail on $200,000 bail.
