A 24-year-old woman has been arrested for federal drug crime charges for attempting to transport a bumper crop of crystal methamphetamine across the United States and Mexico border. She hid 12 pounds of crystal methamphetamine hidden in the rear bumper of her 2004 Volkswagen Jetta. This information was contained in a statement from the U.S. Border Patrol agent in San Diego.
Agents became suspicious because the woman, who is an American citizen, was nervous. A Border Patrol K-9 team performed a routine inspection of the car, which led to a positive alert for drugs at the rear of the car. After the bumper was searched, they found cellophane wrapped bundles of crystal methamphetamine, worth about $214,200. She was arrested and turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration. The vehicle was seized by the Border Patrol.
Since October 2010, the San Diego sector of the Border Patrol has sized over 300 pounds of methamphetamine worth more than $6 million. Also, Border Patrol agents at the Indio station arrested a man in April for trying to smuggle more than $100,000 of methamphetamine. The man had hidden over three pounds of crystal meth in a compartment of a Pontiac Grand Prix.
In August 2010, an 18-year-old man was arrested for federal drug transportation after agents found 14 pounds of crystal methamphetamine in his car near San Clemente, California. In another federal drug crime case, agents arrested a man in April 2010, for smuggling around 15 pounds of cocaine and three pounds of crystal meth in his Dodge Dakota pickup.
California Health and Safety Code 11352 prohibits the transportation of controlled substances. This Federal statute applies when a person is in possession of drugs relating to
drug possession for sale, and this person is transporting the illegal drugs. Federal drug crimes statutes are usually applied when one
transports illegal drugs across state lines.
