In Oakland, California, Long Lam received seven years in federal prison for the drug trafficking of ecstasy and for weapons violations. He was initially indicted by a federal grand jury in July, 2008.
He pled guilty in March 2012 to conspiracy, distribution of ecstasy, possession of a firearm and ammunition by a felon, and possession of a bulletproof vest. He admitted to selling ecstasy out of a restaurant in Oakland. He also confirmed that he was in possession of a loaded firearm and bulletproof vest that were located in his home.
The federal prosecutors showed evidence that the defendant was heard on a wiretap participating in ecstasy trafficking transactions. In total, the transactions involved more than 20,000 pills.
This extensive federal drug trafficking case was the result of a lengthy investigation that was called Operation Triple Stack. The lead agencies included the FBI in San Francisco and the DEA, which are all part of the the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force.
These agencies have the resources for long-term narcotics trafficking investigations. Also, the San Francisco & Oakland police departments were involved in the investigation. Due to a large increase in these type of cases, these agencies are designated to focus on groups of ecstasy and marijuana traffickers. Lam is the just the latest of 18 total defendants indicted in the Northern District of California to be convicted and sentenced for a federal drug crime.
