A former sailor was sentenced to 21 years in a California state prison after pleading guilty to four counts of felony child abuse in the death of his 3-month-old stepdaughter.
The sailor's wife and a caregiver have also pled guilty to child abuse and are awaiting sentencing in San Diego County Superior Court.
Steven Davinger, was on active duty as a 3rd-class petty officer when the child, Aziya, died in 2009. His wife, Sara, was also in the Navy. Both have since left the service.
The child suffered broken ribs, a broken arm and broken leg and died of infections related to the abuse, according to the county medical examiner.
